Unit 312 Professional Discussion — Preparation Guide

Use this before your site visit. The purpose is to help you think about your own work so you can answer naturally — not to memorise a script.

What to expect

Talk about the real job in front of you.

In my process, Unit 312 is normally discussed during the site visit. I will use your actual work as the starting point and explore environmental practice, sustainability and relevant low-carbon / renewable technologies.

Best way to answer: explain what happens in your workplace, give a real example, then tell me what you did or would do.

Before the PD

  • Think about waste and environmental controls on your current job.
  • Think about how materials are ordered, stored and used efficiently.
  • Think about energy-saving measures or controls on the installation.
  • Refresh your knowledge of common low-carbon technologies.
  • Be honest if something is not part of your role or experience.

Common questions about your actual job

Tell me what work you are carrying out on this site.

Be ready to explain the installation, your role and the stage of work.

A good answer includes: what the job is, what you personally are doing, and any environmental considerations that genuinely apply.

What environmental issues could this job create?

Think about waste, packaging, offcuts, dust, noise, spills, unnecessary energy use, damage to materials or rework.

What do you do with waste and offcuts?

Explain the actual site/company arrangements: segregation, recycling, skips, hazardous/special waste where relevant and keeping the work area controlled.

How can you reduce waste on an electrical installation?

Examples can include correct measuring, planning routes, ordering sensible quantities, protecting materials, reusing suitable items where permitted and avoiding damage/rework.

How do you stop your work causing pollution or unnecessary environmental damage?

Use a real example from site where possible. Talk about controls, housekeeping and reporting problems.

Environmental and energy questions

What energy-efficiency measures might you see or install?

Examples could include LED lighting, occupancy/PIR control, daylight control, timers, smart controls, efficient equipment or measures that reduce unnecessary consumption.

Why is correct design and installation important environmentally?

Think about safe operation, avoiding losses, reducing faults/rework, correct control, service life and efficient use of materials and energy.

If you saw an environmental problem on site, what would you do?

Explain who you would report it to, what you could safely do within your responsibility and why you would follow company/site procedures.

Common renewable / low-carbon technology questions

You do not need to pretend you have installed every system. I may ask what you know, whether you have worked around it, and how it could relate to the property or project.

What does a solar PV system do?

Be ready to explain, in simple terms, how PV panels generate DC electricity from daylight, how an inverter converts it for use on the installation, and how generation can be used on site, exported or stored where a battery is fitted.

What should be considered before fitting solar PV?

Think about available roof/installation area, orientation, shading, structure, safe isolation, cable routes, inverter location, existing electrical installation and how the system will connect.

What is an air source heat pump?

Explain that it transfers heat from outside air into the building's heating/hot-water system using electrical energy, rather than creating all of the heat directly like a simple resistance heater.

What affects heat-pump performance?

Possible points include correct sizing, building heat loss, flow temperatures, emitters/underfloor heating, controls, siting and outside conditions.

What other low-carbon technologies could you come across?

Examples: battery storage, EV charge points, ground source heat pumps, solar thermal, heat-recovery ventilation, smart controls and energy-monitoring systems. Only discuss what you genuinely know.

How could battery storage work with solar PV?

At a basic level, surplus generated energy can be stored for later use instead of being immediately exported, depending on the system design and controls.

What is the environmental benefit of good controls?

Controls can help equipment run only when needed, avoid overheating/overlighting and reduce wasted energy while maintaining the required service.

How to answer well

Use this structure

What is it? → Why does it matter? → Give a real example → What did you do?

Do not bluff

If you have not installed a technology, say so. Explain what you understand and keep your answer within your real experience.

Final Unit 312 checklist

I can explain the actual job I am working on.
I can explain how waste is handled on site.
I can give examples of reducing waste/rework.
I can discuss energy-efficiency measures.
I understand solar PV at a sensible basic level.
I understand the basic principle of an ASHP.
I can name other relevant low-carbon technologies.
I will answer from genuine experience and say when something is outside my role.
