Smaller jobs are fine.

If your normal work is made up of smaller installations, domestic work, maintenance, additions, alterations or fault finding, we can build your portfolio across more genuine jobs.

The important bit: you do not need to find one huge “perfect NVQ job”. If the work is genuine and relevant, each job can chip away at the criteria and range you still need.

Every genuine job chips away at the portfolio.

The difference is simply that a learner with one broad-range project may cover a lot in a small number of assessments, while a learner doing smaller jobs may need more individual pieces of evidence across more jobs.

This does not replace your site visits

You will still need the required observation and site-visit evidence in my assessment process. The Targeted Evidence Route is how we deal with the remaining gaps when your normal work does not naturally give us everything in one or two large projects.

How the targeted route works

1

I review your portfolio

I identify the criteria and range that are still genuinely missing.

2

You get clear targets

I tell you what types of work or evidence to look out for next.

3

Wait for it to occur naturally

Do not stage work or invent evidence. Capture it when it genuinely happens.

4

Capture the right evidence

Photos, work products, a short targeted RA and witness support where appropriate.

5

I review it again

If it is sufficient and defensible, that gap is reduced or closed and we move to the next target.

What might a target look like?

Your targets are based on your portfolio gaps. They are not a generic checklist that every learner must complete next.

PVC conduit

Look out for a genuine job where you personally install it. Capture useful progress photos and the finished work.

Control equipment

For example heating controls, a wiring centre, timer, contactor or other suitable control equipment where it genuinely forms part of your work.

Inspection & testing

Look for work where you can genuinely carry out the relevant inspection/testing and retain the associated work product or record.

Fault finding

Capture a naturally occurring fault properly: condition found, diagnosis, corrective action and the evidence that supports what you did.

Cable or containment range

When a missing cable type or containment system comes up naturally, capture it clearly instead of waiting for a massive project.

Equipment / termination

A smaller replacement or installation can still provide useful evidence where it genuinely meets a remaining criterion or range item.

Shorter, targeted reflective accounts

Not every reflective account needs to describe a huge project from start to finish. On this route, I may ask you for several shorter, criterion-specific reflective accounts about genuine pieces of work.

Each one should still explain what you personally did, how you did it, why you did it and the outcome. In my evidence model, a reflective account is used to close a legitimate gap and should be supported by genuine corroborating evidence, including witness testimony where required.

Example — small socket alteration: a short RA could focus on the genuine planning, installation, termination, safe working and testing activities that actually occurred. It does not need pages of unrelated material.
Example — extractor fan replacement: the account could focus on the equipment, termination, controls and functional checks that were genuinely part of the job.
Example — genuine cooker fault: the account could focus on safe isolation, diagnosis, interpretation of results, rectification and proving satisfactory operation.
Example — short conduit installation: the account can target the containment work that actually occurred without pretending the job covered the whole installation unit.

What should I capture on a small job?

Do not manufacture the gap away. Do not stage faults, recreate paperwork, claim somebody else’s work or write an RA about something you did not personally do. Tell me when a target occurs naturally and we will use the most appropriate evidence.

What happens after each submission?

I review the new evidence against the portfolio you already have. Some targets may be fully closed; others may still need a second instance, additional range or stronger supporting evidence. I then give you the next useful targets.
